Robert Smith Mix

The cure recently played their first three albums live at the VIVID festival in Sydney. I didn’t go but I’m sure it was amazing!! Modular Records have since posted this awesome little mix of tracks hand picked by Robert Smith himself; songs that influenced the recording of the aforementioned cure albums. Enjoy!

My teets almost exploded with nostalgia the other day when my reliably awesome friend Tommy send me this link…. Amazing.
This little vignette of retro handheld video games have been so lovingly recreated in flash that I was instantly transported back to the school oval in 5th grade, when Kieran Jones would only let me watch him play Zelda over his shoulder during lunch time…
If anyone is looking for me I’m making up for a childhood void of videogames. See you at 3am.

It’s been a long time between blogs. 2010 was a slow year for me and perhaps not my finest. All the more reason for some major life renovations! A million sparks ignited in my head when I saw this post via my regularly awesome mate Tommy. Time to action this shizzle!

A work colleague put me onto this little gem of a website, created by the pentagram design studio. You answer 4 questions and it gives you a type face that suits your personality type (pun definitely intended).
Simple, but beautifully produced with a slow, meandering video narative from a faux psychologist. Great history vid on each font too.
I got Cooper Black Italic. And yeah - I think it kinda suits me.

Brand New have posted a great little round up of the best and worst of identities and rebrands of 2009. Lots of interesting insights and brutally honest feedback on a bunch of logos, wordmarks and rebrands; Some amazing like the City of Melbourne rebrand, and totally crapola ones like the ‘bing’ search logo. My fav. quote is for the latter: “at least it wouldn’t look like a free font drawn by a 15-year old in Corel Draw, in 1987”. Ouch.

OK, so I found another friggin’ awesome illustrator. His name is Mateusz Kolek, but the contact page of his website doesn’t seem to work, so I dont know any more info than that!.
Makes me want to draw my dreams and turn them into these kind of lucid, wild images!

I’ve always been into superstar industrial designers, first Mark Newson, then Ross Lovegrove, Jonathan Ive, Naoto Fukasawa, etc. But I’ve never been as obsessed with a designer as I am now with Dieter Rams.

I’ve known of his work (mainly for Braun in Germany) for a while, but ‘refound’ him through Jonathan Ives references to him in apple products, and more recently because of a major exhibition of his work at the London Museum of Design, and an accompanying book. The dude is a living legend of design. Everything he has designed (and he’s done a lot!) is simple, clean, intuitive and functional; Which I think makes excellent, honest products. He is also very humble, well spoken and interesting to listen to!

I can’t believe I went through uni without anyone every mentioning his 10 design principles. I think I would have done a lot better if I’d learn them and tried to follow them!

Every since the release and popularity of the iphone in Jan 2007, people have been ga-ga over Apple; and the hype and rumour mill is at melting point at the moment over their latest incarnation, the rumoured apple tablet product.

What I find so interesting is the psudo-product design that is surrounding the rumours; peoples predictions, wants and understanding of the design language put into fake renderings of fake products. It really shows how well apple design is understood and lusted after. A google image search brings up dozens of such designs. I love it!

Found this house via Moco today. In my old age, I’ve become this massive nester; with this sudden urge to build a house and create a ‘home base’ somewhere. I love the simplicity and minimalism of this one. I love the exposed concrete construction, the little details like the tree set into a hole in the back decking, the white storage inside. Awesome.

Tonight I found a radical Illustrator/graphic designer from Sweden called Jonas Bergstrand. He’s all about a contemporary take on retro illustration; mashing it up and making it look all pink panther, Jetsons and south park at the same time. I particularly like the depth to some of the more collage-y peices!
